The Different Types of Gutter Guards

All Aluminum Gutters

It’s that time of the year again, when gutter cleaning is in full swing as homeowners take to their ladders to dig out the debris that’s been left over from winter weather. But, when you mount your ladder on a nice sunny Saturday, do you ever wish your gutter chores would just do themselves? Well, that’s exactly where gutter guards come into play in their many shapes and sizes.
  • Reverse curve gutter guards allow water to enter the gutter during a small slit, while leaves and debris slide over the opening and onto the ground.
  • Mesh gutter guards are arguable the most popular style. They cover the gutter completely, but their porous design allows only water to trickle in.
  • Bottle brush butter guards feature a line of bristles, much like those meant to keep birds off of statues and buildings. The bristles face upward so they can catch any debris as rainwater flows through.
  • Nylon gutter guards are great for colder climates. They help keep snow and ice dam accumulation to a minimum, and are easily attached.
  • Foam gutter guards are tubelike and fit right inside the gutter. Their main purpose is to act as a displacer for debris that only water is able to penetrate.
At All Aluminum Gutters, we care about the well-being of your home and pride ourselves on our friendly, professional and prompt service. If you’re looking to install a gutter guard system, look no further! We carry a wide variety of options to ensure that you are able to choose the perfect style and fit or your home.

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

All Aluminum Gutters

Spring is here and the weather is finally warming up, which means only one thing -- spring cleaning season is in full force. But, before you begin to tear through your closets and pack away your winter wardrobe, try checking these exterior maintenance tasks off your spring cleaning to-do list first.

  • Clean the gutters. Your gutters have likely retained a ton of debris over the winter, and maybe even suffered a few minor damages. On the first warm weekend of the year, get up on that ladder and start cleaning. Keep an eye out for any loose or leaking gutters.

  • Repair the siding. Your home’s siding acts as it’s armor, so it’s important to make sure you replace any damaged or rotting boards. Remember, peeling or warping is a sign of water damage. If you’re looking to repaint, always sand and prime first for best results!

  • Seal the house. You’re going to want to keep your cool, conditioned air indoors this season, so re-caulking around windows and doors is a must. Inspect your home for any cracks or holes and fill up whatever you find.

  • Replace the screens. Keep those pesky summer bugs out by cleaning and inspecting your window and door screens for damage. Patch any holes smaller than a quarter, and replace any screens that are severely torn.

  • Clean the air ducts. Air quality is key, especially when you plant to spend a ton of time indoors enjoying the air conditioning. That’s why it’s so important to have your ducts cleaned out by a professional. Trust us, you’ll be happy to avoid all those allergies.

  • Inspect the roof. All that snow, wind and ice can really do a number on your roof, especially if you fell victim to ice dams this year. As you’re cleaning your gutters, take the time to brush any debris off the roof and look for damaged or missing shingles as well.

  • Mow the lawn. Kick start your luscious green yard after a long, dormant winter with a good cut. Remember to remove and seed any areas that sustained severe damage, and begin watering early on to rejuvenate your yard.

  • Fire up the sprinklers. As we mentioned above, irrigation is key for getting your lawn back in gear after the winter. If you haven’t already, give your local irrigation pros a call to have them blow out and start up your sprinklers for the season.

Important Ladder Safety Tips To Follow

All Aluminum Gutters

With spring showers on the way, it’s important to make sure you check your gutters for any existing damage beforehand. That being said, unless you’re extraordinarily tall, you’re definitely going to need to grab a ladder to get up there. But, before you climb up to your gutters this season, make sure you read the following ladder safety tips from the American Ladder Institute to help prevent accidental injury and damage to both you and your home.
  • Be in the right mindset. Having off day, or feel tired or dizzy? It’s best to put off gutter maintenance until you’re feeling your best to avoid an accidental fall.

  • Mind the weather. Spring has a tendency to be quite windy and rainy. If your scheduled maintenance falls on a day with particularly severe weather conditions, reschedule.
  • Dress for the occasion. Always wear shoes with a non-slip grip to prevent falling, and avoid wearing loose or baggy clothing. Also remember, gloves are key for gutter cleaning!
  • Use a sturdy ladder. Inspect your ladder for any loose or missing parts and make sure it stands up tall and sits even on the floor. Be sure to choose the right ladder for your weight and your home’s height, and avoid placing it near any active doors or windows.
  • Follow the 3-point rule. When climbing a ladder you should be making 3 points of contact at all times. This means you’ll either have 2 feet and 1 hand, or 1 foot and 2 hands on the ladder at any given point.
  • Tow your tools. To stick to the 3-point rule, you must be able to carry tools up the ladder without compromising your 3 points of contact. Tool belts and pulley systems work well.
Want to know the best, and safest way to clean and repair your gutters? It’s by leaving it to a trained professional of course. Luckily, the gutter experts at All Aluminum Gutters are always just a phone call away!

Signs That Say You Need New Gutters

All Aluminum Gutters
531 Sunrise Highway, West Babylon, New York 11704
(631) 816-2498

Unless you had a professional install your gutters when you purchased your home, chances are you probably don’t know how old they actually are. That being said, while well-maintained gutters can usually stand the test of time, being out in the elements can certainly take its toll. That’s why it’s important to be able to determine when your gutters are screaming out for help, and when you should go about replacing them.
Visible Cracks - Imagine trying to fill a bucket with water, but the bucket is riddled with holes. Not so effective after all, right? Well, the same can be said for gutters that have begun to crack.

Separated Seams - It’s common for an aged gutter system to become weak at its seams. While seams can sometimes be resealed, the better choice is to opt for new, seamless gutters instead.

Weathered Exterior -
If you notice that your home’s siding has become bubbled up or exhibits peeling paint, your gutters may be to blame.

Wood Rot - From your fascia boards to your door jambs and window sills, overflowing gutters can wreak havoc on your home. Wherever there’s evidence of rot, your gutters are likely faulty.

Mildewed Basement -
Does the stinky scent of mold and mildew smack you in the face whenever you go down into your cellar? If so, chances are there’s an issue with your drainage system.

If you survey your gutters and determine that you’re ready to repair or replace, look no further than All Aluminum Gutters. Serving Long island, Queens, Westchester and the Bronx with high quality services and affordable pricing for over 30 years, there’s no gutter job we can’t handle!

The Do's & Don'ts of Ice Dam Removal

All Aluminum Gutters

Ice dams can cause a slew of costly problems for homeowners if left unattended to. With the weather finally warming up, that snow and ice residue on your roof is probably beginning to melt off, which means it’s prime time for ice dams to form. To help you protect your home and its gutters, here’s a quick guide for removing ice dams from your roof.
  • DON’T install any mechanical equipment in the attic. Not only are these a fire hazard that can easily ignite your insulation, but they can also cause ice dams to worsen from the heat they produce.
  • DO ventilate and insulate your attic. In order to help snow and ice melt more evenly and prevent ice dams you’ll need to keep your attic’s temperature regulated. Ventilating and insulating will help ensure that it doesn’t become too warm.
  • DO remove snow from your roof. Using a roof rake, gently and carefully pull or push as much snow as you can off your roof. Make sure to pull down and not across to preserve your shingles.
  • DON’T ever walk on the roof. As you well know, snow and ice can be very slippery, which is why you should never attempt to stand on your roof while cleaning it. Instead, use a sturdy ladder to reach the roof.

  • DO chip away at the ice carefully. It’s important to be very gentle when removing ice from your roof and gutters, and cease when you’re close to the roofing. Aggressively chipping away at ice can cause damage that require roof repairs.
  • DON’T use snow melt on your roof or gutters. While these might seem like a good option, using chemicals on your roof and gutters can cause them to corrode. Once the ice melts and travels through your gutters, the runoff can also be detrimental to your lawn.
  • DO consider calling a professional! Removing snow and ice from your roof and gutters can be a very dangerous endeavor. Like many home maintenance tasks, it might be a better idea to give your local gutter cleaning company a call instead of trying to DIY it.
Even with the most diligent snow removal plan, your gutters can still be susceptible to sagging, cracking and detachment due to the extra weight. If you find that your gutters have been damaged due to inclement weather conditions or need to be cleaned, just give All Aluminum Gutters a call.

We offer gutter installation and repair at an affordable price to customers in the Long island, Queens, Westchester and Bronx areas. Click here or call 631-816-2498 to learn more.
